Couldn't get into "Get My Payment" so I filed... suddenly I could get in. Coincidence?

I've been using TurboTax for some time now, but the last few years I have owed money, so I did not give them my direct deposit info.

 

After trying for several days to get into the "Get My Payment" site (kept getting a message that they could not determine my eligibility), I decided to go ahead and file 2019 taxes. This time, I gave them the direct deposit info to take the taxes owed.

 

And the next morning... bingo! I could get into the site. Of course it still wanted to get my direct deposit info. So now I can start checking to see if they update the info on that get-my-payment site.

 

No real question here, just passing along my experience. I don't know if filing the 2019 taxes did the trick, but I would be surprised if their database got updated right away.

Thanks for the information.  The reason you were able to enter your information was most likely because you filed a 2019 return.  

 

The Get My Payment application will return "Payment Status Not Available" for several reasons, including:

 

  • You are required to file a tax return, but:
    • We haven't finished processing your 2019 return
    • The application doesn't yet have your data; we’re working on adding more data to allow more people to use it.
    •  
  • You don't usually file a return, and:
    • You used Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here but we haven’t processed your entry yet
    • You receive an SSA or RRB Form 1099 or SSI or VA benefits; information has not been loaded onto our systems yet for people who don’t normally file a tax return.
    • You’re not eligible for a payment (see Eligibility).

We update Get My Payment data once per day, overnight so there is no need to check more often. If you are eligible for a payment and have provided your information either through a recent tax return or the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here application, please check back for updates.

Don't know why  you are upset but yes, the IRS would use a 2018 return to qualify for the stimulus money BUT only if you do not file a 2019 return.

Yeah well I had previously filed a 2018 return and that's supposed to qualify you as well.
