My son checked the box that asks if you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax and didn’t receive the first stimulus check. Is it too late to file an amendment and request the stimulus check before mid-November 2022? Thanks.
The first and second stimulus checks were based on 2020 income and 2020 circumstances. If your son could NOT be claimed as someone else's dependent on a 2020 return, but incorrectly said he could be claimed, then he can amend his 2020 tax return and use the recovery rebate credit to get those stimulus payments. He can expect that amended return to take up to a year to be processed by the IRS. It will have to be filed by mail.
Select your tax year for amending instructions:
Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:
