I received and reported w-2g on my 2015 return from winnings received on 12/18/2015. I just received penalty for back taxes indicating IRS received W-2G from winning in 2016 in which I did not report. I tried calling casino and they said they reported it for 2015 but was not sent to IRS until 2016. Can I simply send in my W-2G along with return from 2015 to stop garnishments, penalties, etc or will that open up an additional audit on 2015 return.
Yes, you should respond to the letter with a copy of your original return for 2015, and the W2G showing the winnings were for 2015, and recorded on your 2015 tax return. Send an explanation (similar to the information you provided here) with your forms. Be sure to keep a copy of everything you send.
If they have a different form and/or amount for 2016, they will advise you and you can go forward from there to pursue resolution if there is still a question.
Any Forms W2G from the casino for 2015, would be sent to the IRS in 2016.

Will that open up an additional request for proof of 2015 winnings and losses?
@smirjf19 It's possible they may want more information for the 2015 return, however they are trying to resolve 2016 so this is the focus for them.
