Can if we deduct expenses somewhere that Turbo Tax won't let us itemize this year?

No, you can't deduct expenses somewhere else. If you have a deduction that belongs on Schedule A, it needs to be entered there. If you are unable to itemize because your standard deduction is larger, you can't take both the standard deduction and also a deduction that would be entered on Schedule A.

But record it anyway so that it will carry over to your state return as applicable.
