I got a letter from the IRS saying I need to submit form 8863 to support education credits I claimed on form 1040 line 16. I looked up form 8863 and it doesnt apply to me— I’m not claiming a student, I am the student. I think there was a misunderstanding when I used TurboTax to file! I don’t understand why I filled out line 16 on the form 1040. I wish I could go through the questions TurboTax asked when I was filing my return and double check, but I can’t figure out how to do that. I just want my money lol
If you want to see the questions and answers for a prior year you would need to download the .tax file from Online and open it in the Desktop program.
You can only get the Desktop program for the last 3 years. 2021 is now the prior year and may be locked while they get ready for next year so you may have to wait to download the .tax2021 file. If you paid for the Online version you can ask for the Desktop download. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install the program.
After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW).
It is your parents that claim the education deduction for you on their tax return.
If you are a dependent, reply back to the IRS that you agree that you made a mistake.
The IRS will make the adjustment.
