Can I subtract disaster losses from my 2017 taxes. Is today the last day to file 2017 tax amendments ?

I had a flood in my basement between Xmas2017 and beging of 2018. I had had a hip replacement so I discovered 12" of water when I first climbed the stairs { mid january 2018). I could not deduct the loss :over $10000. not covered by insurance} in 2018, but could I claim the loss in2017 ?

It is too late to amend your tax return for 2017. However, the casualty loss is limited to the amount over 10% of your income and you need to be able to benefit from itemizing your deductions to benefit from it. With the 2017 standard deduction of $6,350 (single) and $12,700 (joint filer) that you would take in lieu of the itemized deduction, the casualty loss may not have benefited you anyway.
