Can I look at the taxes I reported in 2005?

I have a copy on my computer but the file type shows .tax  . It's not a pdf.

You would need the 2005 program in order to view that .tax file.

The only way to see the contents of a .tax file is to open it with the TurboTax software for the corresponding year.

You could try TaxPrinter. You send them your .tax file and they send you back a PDF of the tax return. TaxPrinter has no connection with TurboTax. I have never used TaxPrinter, so I cannot make a recommendation. I'm just making you aware of it.

I believe that IRS transcripts only go back 10 years.  You might be able to get a photocopy of your return from the IRS for a fee, but it may be too old even for that.  There are a couple of services that keep old computers with old software, and can convert a tax data file to a PDF for a fee.  I can't vouch for a particular service, and you want to be sure the information is transferred in a secure manner, not just e-mail.

Request a copy of a tax return from the IRS

Prior year tax returns are available from the IRS for a fee. Taxpayers can request a copy of a tax return by completing and mailing Form 4506 to the IRS address listed on the form. There's a $43 fee for each copy and these are available for the current tax year and up to seven years prior.
