Can I duplicate my 2016 return & use that copy to play what-if's for 2017? I'm contemplating starting SS and want to see the interplay. Not using your online product.

Alternatively, could I create a new 2016 taxpayer and auto populate it using my 2016 data? I know I could just create a new taxpayer and key everything in all over again but I'm looking for a less labor intensive method.

You can do this in the TurboTax CD/Download versions, but be very  careful. You should first save your return with another name  and make a copy your return by selecting Save As (or Duplicate in Mac) from the File menu.

  • You'll be renaming and working with this copy. This preserves your original return "as is." Make sure that you don't make changes in the return that you intend to file for 2016.

You can also use the What-If-Worksheet in your 2016 software to try out scenarios without making a copy. You can find that by going to the Forms mode (Upper left corner in a MAC) and searching for it . See the screenshots below.
