Can I amend the 2017 tax return to change the status from married file separately to married file jointly?

After your tax return has been fully processed you can change it to a joint return provided both spouses agree to file jointly.

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 2-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.

Wait about 3 weeks and you can check the status of your amended return:
