Can i amend my 2020 and 2019 taxes? i claimed my foster son wrong and need to fix it

i was supposed a child of mine dependent and didnt know that for the last 2 years the dcs told me to amend my taxes to get that extra money for him but i cant figure out how to do that

Select your tax year for amending instructions:

 

Your amended tax returns will need to be mailed in separate envelopes.  Do not try to combine them.   Use a mailing service that will provide tracking so you will know the returns were received, since it will take at least six months or maybe longer for your amended returns to be processed.

 

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine  months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

Not sure what "extra money" you are trying to get.   There are a number of child-related credits available.   And for a child you claim on a 2020 tax return, you will want to claim the recovery rebate credit to get the stimulus money for the child, if you did not get it yet.  The first one was for $500; the 2nd one was for $600 if you claimed a child younger than 17.  The child must have a Social Security number.
