Can I amend an accepted return to add my business expenses? If so is there a penalty that I would have to pay to amend? Would adding expenses increase my refund?

You are posting from Deluxe and if you are using online you need Self-Employed to prepare a Schedule C for your business expenses---so you will have to pay for the upgraded software.    Wait until your return has been fully processed before you jump into amending.   Sending an amended return while they are working on the just -accepted one can cause confusion and delays.

And....we cannot tell you if adding your expenses will increase or decrease your refund since it can affect other credits, etc.  We cannot see any of your information.

Hi, I realize this is old.... but it seems you may finally be able to solve my problem. I am trying to amend my 2023 tax return that I filed last year on turbo tax. It only included my W-2 income. The reason I am amending it, is too add self-employment income and expenses (add schedule C). I was able to start amending my return on turbo tax. It let me add my business info, my business income, but it will not let me add my expenses. It is like the website glitches. When I click the add expense button for that business, it just reloads the same page and doesn't open up the expenses page. Please help!!

If you are using TurboTax Online, you may need to upgrade to a higher version in order to be able to enter expenses for a Schedule C business.

Or, any version of TurboTax Desktop will allow entry of business expenses.  The higher versions have more guidance along the way.
