Audit for tax year 2017

What do I need to do and send to the IRS for an audit on my 2017 Form 1040? Specifically, they are questioning my Sch E Mortgage Interest. Can I get an extension to gather my documents? I am on orders in Japan, the IRS notification is dated July 1, 2019, and just received the letter today July 16,2019.

The IRS probably wants verification that you correctly apportioned your mortgage interest deduction between your Sch A and your Sch E. There’s no extension required. The only downside to delaying your response is that if you do owe more tax, there will be more interest added on that you will have to pay.

Thank you! I will send them all my receipts / papers associated with Sch E and will not delay the process. Can I send on-line?

No you can't send documents to the IRS online. You must mail them to the address on the letter.

Be sure you send copies and keep the originals. Your name and SSN should be on each document. Call the number at the top of your letter if you have any question about what to send.
