Assistance with Amending Incorrect Tax Filing

Hello,

I filed my taxes last week, but I realized I did it incorrectly. I paid federal taxes without being aware that, as an F-1 student, I shouldn’t have been required to pay them.

I contacted support, but they were unsure how to amend my return. Has anyone experienced a similar situation? What steps should I take to correct this and get a refund for the amount I paid?

Thank you,

You will have to file a 1040X with a Form 8843.

It is.

But before you amend your return you should wait to make sure that the IRS has processed your return.  If you owed taxes wait until the money has been paid or if you had a refund wait for it to be deposited.

The IRS often catches taxpayer errors and fixes them for you so make sure they haven't done that before you start the amended return.

Once it is done then log in to your TurboTax account and click on 'amend my return'.  The necessary forms will be added automatically and you can make the changes to your return that you need to.
