In preparing 2022 taxes I realized that even though the standard deduction resulted in a small reduction in federal taxes, this forced Maryland state taxes to use the standard deduction as well and resulted in greatly higher taxes paid to the state.
The same issue occurred in my 2021 taxes, Turbotax also recommended standardized deductions because my itemized came in just a few hundred below the standard deduction, but had I chosen to itemize my state taxes would have been more than $1500 lower, despite ~$100 higher federal taxes.
While I understand I can file amended returns for errors in my return, does choosing to switch from standard to itemized deduction qualify as a reason to amend a return? Should I be concerned about penalties or any red flags for late payment since I will now be paying about $100 more taxes for 2021?
