Amending Federal Return

I used my last paystub to file my federal return, the numbers have always been the same in the past, and when I received my W-2 my employer deducted what I pay for insurance from my taxable wages. I corrected it for my state return. When I go to amend my federal return will it show the original amount it was filed with or will I need to input it again? When I download my return it shows the correct numbers since I corrected them prior to filing my state return.

I’ve learned my lesson to just wait for a W-2 and forgo unnecessary stress.

Thank you.

You have created a mess by changing the federal return to file the state before using the amendment process.  So because you only need to amend the federal return you can do it one of 2 ways ... use the one that makes more sense to you.

1) paper file the 1040X ... using the figures off the original 1040 & the updated 1040 complete  the amendment form by hand and mail in the 1040X with the w-2 form attached.  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf

2) undo the changes you made then start the amendment process to make the changes to both the fed & state returns then just efile the federal.   Amendments cannot be done until late february.

I can’t undo since my state has already been accepted with the correct information. I did find a way to have another filing service to calculate it for me based on the inputed values. So at least I don’t have to do that part. Just print, sign and mail.
