i have a question that somewhat deals an amended tax return. was wondering if you might know. i filed my 2020 tax return already and got refund. the third stim was processed after it was filed so it was used to determine if i qualify for the the payment. i was $2k over the limit and did no receive it.
However I never realized that I can file as head of household (I do meet the qualifications for it). I always thought it was a married person thing so never even looked into it. if I file as head of household and IRS accepts the return and process it, i would qualify for third stim. will they automatically go back and pay the it. I have tried since they made the stim payment to get an answer but can never get through to the IRS to ask them.
thanks in advance
Yes, if you amend your return and then qualify for the stimulus payment you will get it.
As an alternative to contacting the IRS directly. You can contact a local branch.
You can call toll-free at 1-800-829-1040 or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center Local IRS Office .
i've been trying to contact their office regularly. they open call center at 7am and by 715 they have reached the max number of calls according to message.
just trying to figure out. if i amend return i have to contact IRS about stim or do they automatically go back for the payment.
just waiting for turbotax to get the updated form and allow to amended 2020 tax returns
thanks
The current date for amended forms in TurboTax is March 26. You can check IRS forms availability table for TurboTax individual (personal) tax products.
The IRS has not said yet how they will handle catch up payments for the third stimulus. Filing an amended will show you are eligible. The IRS may send corrected payments or it may be part of the 2021 return, much as the first and second stimulus catch-ups were paid out as an additional refund. At this point the Service is focused on sending out initial payments while also handling tax returns.
