Hi, I e-filed my 2023 1040 tax return (Home & Business) today. 10 minutes later, I realized that I made a mistake in providing one of the data points. I logged back in and corrected the error. It did not change the tax amount owed. I also have not paid the tax, I scheduled the tax amount to be debited from my bank account on April 15.
However, after correcting the error, I attempted to "re-file", but Turbotax kept indicating that the return has been filed.
Question: How do I know that the correction I made has been reflected in the return? If not, do I have to now file an Amended return even though the correction was made within 10 mins and before even IRS has "accepted" the filing?
Thank you.
Once you transmitted your return via e-file no changes can be made to that return. Any changes would have to done via an Amended Return. Unless, your return is rejected. Then you can make changes, correct whatever caused the rejection and resubmit. If your return is not rejected, then you should evaluate whether or not you need to file an amended return. If you do, you should wait until your payment has been made before amending. For more information on Amending, see the following TurboTax Help Article:

Thanks for the info. I just received email that the return was accepted. Can I file a 1040X now? Thanks.
What do you need to amend for? You should probably wait until the first tax due is paid and to see if the IRS catches it and adjusts your return for you.
You will still get the refund from the first original return or still need to pay the first tax due. In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.
Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe. I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.
Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.
