Amended tax return for 2021

After filing my return for 2021, I realized there was an error in my 2020 return -- basically, I had forgotten to deduct capital losses carried forward from 2019. I filed an amendment for the 2020 return back in May 2022, but I haven't heard anything from the IRS yet (it doesn't show up on the amended tax return status website either). The error also affects my 2021 return, but I was advised to wait till the 2020 amendment was processed. But, given how long it is taking, I am wondering if I should file the 2021 amendment as well?

@vvenkate  - IRS is backlogged and amendments are taking 6-9 months.  Continue to be patient; you are probably nearing the top of the queue.

In June the IRS had 2 million amendments backlogged.  That is now down to 800,000.

Agree you should wait for the 2020 amendment to process before submitting 2021.  There is plenty of time on 2021 - the deadline is April 17, 2025

keep checking this website (once per week):

if you follow the "advice" and wait to file 2021 amendment and then wait for that one, you will miss the e-File deadline for 2022 tax return. If you request an extension of time for 2022, you could still be waiting in Oct 2023.

You can't assume IRS backlog is down to 6-8 months.

the backlog is eleven-twelve months, and, then add three months or more to get a refund check in you hands.

@fanfare - yes, I can from my pesonal expereince.......just had a family member's amendments process in 6 months, which included the time to get the check.

If I can'tg assume that the backlog is 6-8 months, how can you state t is 9-12 months and 3 months for checks.  How can you state that?

and it is true from the iRS's weekly postings that the backlog was 2 million in June and 800,000 now - THAT is an indication the time required to get from the end of the line to the front of the line is dropping.

I can state it from personal experience with a 1040-x marked Completed  on Sep 9 2022.

Still waiting for the refund check.

@fanfare - any chance the check was lost in the mail? anyone followed up? 3 months is an unreasonably long time post 'complete' status.

backlog now down to 700,000:

Status of Processing Form 1040-X, Amended Individual Tax Return: As of December 3, 2022, we had 700,000 unprocessed Forms 1040-X. We are processing these returns in the order received and the current timeframe can be more than 20 weeks. Please don't file the same return more than once. Taxpayers should continue to check Where's My Amended Return? for the most up to date processing status available.
