Amended return

I submitted my tax return but later realized I forgot to add a w2. My return was already accepted and I could not add it. So I amended and added it. Now it's been 5 weeks and my return is still processing. How long should I expect to wait to receive it?

Did you wait until your original tax  return was processed before you filed the amended tax return?  Fully processed means that you have receive your refund or your balance due is deducted from your account.

It generally takes 8 to 16 weeks to process an amended tax return (Form 1040-X).

Refer to the IRS website Where’s My Amended Return? for more information.

I saw it said accepted on the irs website and it didn't reject it so I started the amendment. I did not get my return before submitting the amended return. How much difference does that make on time when receiving the return? Also can I get a better look by viewing my transcripts?

You generally don't want to send an amended return for an original return that hasn't been fully processed or it could show every thing down.

You will need to contact the IRS for information. It might be easiest to set up an account with them.

IRS Individual Online Account

  • Taxpayers with a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number can create or access their IRS Individual Online Account to get information they need to file their return.
  • With an IRS Individual Online Account, people can:
  • View balance owed, payment history and schedule payments.
  • Cancel scheduled payments.
  • Get transcripts.
  • View or create payment plans.
  • See digital copies of some IRS notices.
  • View key data from their most recently filed tax return, including adjusted gross income.
  • Validate bank accounts and save multiple accounts, eliminating the need to re-enter bank account information every time they make a payment.
  • View, approve and electronically sign power of attorney and tax information authorizations from their tax professional.

I'm learning this now. It was a oh no moment of forgetting to put in the w2. I thought the quicker the better. But finding out now that isn't the case. I thought it just had to be accepted then I could start the amendment. I didn't realize it had to be completely processed. Thank you for the reply.
