Yes, I'm way late...
Wife filed a quick online return to receive covid payments. She did not list any income or other financial info.
I need to file a complete married filing jointly return with all our financial info. Income, cap gains, interest etc... Can I accomplish this using 1040X? 1040? IRS instructions weren't clear to me...
Than you in advance!
Rob
Yep. Make sure she is listed as the primary taxpayer and you as the spouse to keep the IRS from getting confused.
However, here are two other options:
You will have to file a 2019 amended tax return, Form 1040-X, filing jointly and enter all of the income and deductions for the both of you.
See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a 2019 tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/amend-tax-return/amend-2019-return/L3oo85zNv_US_en_US?uid=l94ry355
Your wife DID file a return to get the 2020 stimulus payments so you must amend her return to add you and switch to MFJ since she should have filed MFS.
If you submitted the non-filer form, it was processed by the IRS as an original filed return. Any subsequent filing cannot be filed electronically; it has to be mailed in. If you file your return with a Form 1040X it will be processed like an amended return.
