Amended return status says : Take Action

It's mid-December.

Amended return filed in May suddenly appeared under "Where's My Amended return"

status : not processed.

But, why does "Where's my amended Return"
tell me to

Take Action !

namely to call some IRS phone number?
My return has not been processed yet.
What's the point ?

Has anyone called the number ?

It has been taking many months for the IRS to process amended returns, which piled up in trailers during the pandemic.   Now that you are finally seeing something on the IRS site, if it tells you to call a phone number--DO that.  TurboTax receives no information from the IRS after you file your return, so no one at TT knows why the IRS wants you to call.

The thing is, that number is always there with instructions to call no matter what.

My return also says to take action but anytime you call you cannot get through to a person.  Very frustrating.  I don't know what else to do.  I don't know with it saying take action if that is because there is an issue or just because it is taking so long but it should say "delayed" if it's on their end.

Sign into your online IRS  account to see if you have an IRS letter posted that you may not have gotten ...

https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account

Or try one of these ... but be aware that amended returns are taking much longer than 6 months to process ...

Call the IRS:  1-800-829-1040  hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info).  Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.

Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".

Then press 3 "for all other questions."

Then press 2 "for all other questions."

- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don’t enter anything.

- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Then press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.

Then press 4 for all other inquiries.

It should then transfer you to an agent.

@Bunchwilly - not necessary to call; just continue to watch the "wheres my amendment" tool at the IRS website.  Given how the IRS is reducing the backlogs, it shouldn't be too much longer until they process your amendment

the backlog was 2 million back in June and it's now down to 800,000.

You probably don't need to do anything but if there is  a phone number to call you can try to call it.  Otherwise the IRS will send you a notice in the mail if you really need to do something more.

Has ANYONE gotten any action on their 2020 amended taxes?? Going from 2M down to 800K isn't a lot for a 2 year wait! Mine was accepted 4/21 and NOTHING!! I even got one CSR on phone around August 2021 (all he did was apologize and said it's taking up to 20 weeks instead of 16) and haven't been able to get anyone since!! I call 4-10 times a month!! I bet if they stopped ALL tax work and were forced to finish 2020, it would be done in a couple of weeks because Americans would be ANGRY their 2022 was being held up.
