Amended Return Shenanigans

I submitted a 2020 amended return after the unemployment rules were changed because it helped my family qualify for additional credits that the IRS automatic recalculation wouldn't check for (convenient of them). The IRS said if you qualified for new credits you had to amend your return.

Long story somewhat short :P, the IRS has been sitting on my amended return since they reported receiving it in April. The "where's my amended return?" tool claims it was adjusted and then completed on 9/10/21 but I have not gotten any letters or a refund check in the mail. So this morning I scoured the web for a how to guide to actually got on the phone with an IRS rep. To the rep's credit she did give me some additional insight but not exactly what I wanted to here.

Apparently on 9/14/21 the amended return was put back under review, just 4 days after they still claim on their tool it was completed (9/10). Well it's now January of 2022 and the rep was not able to give me a timeframe for when I might expect to receive any notice or additional refund. She also helped me understand that this was also the reason I only received $450 of the $1,800 in early 2021 CTC payments (yes, I know I can still get the rest on my 2021 return).

I guess I can only wait but if there is anyone who has any ideas or thinks this is way too long and isn't normal I would appreciate any feedback.

It’s way too long and totally ridiculous! Unfortunately the IRS has not been properly funded and their computer system is old and archaic. The Taxpayer Advocate General sends a report to Congress every year begging for funding to no avail.

The IRS is way behind on returns. Millions of additional amended returns and reduced staff have things clogged up. Not to mention, people that haven't been filing suddenly decided to file for 2 or 3 years all at once. The review process is also more extensive this year and backed up. You may receive a letter in another couple months telling you it is under review with an approximate time frame for when they hope to have that look done. However, some people are then getting a second letter of "review still in progress". Be patient is all you can do.

On 8/20 my amended return was marked completed.

In December, a letter dated 11/15   (  !  )  said a check was to be issued but that check was then held back.

In my case there was a good reason for IRS to do that.

In your case, there doesn't seem to be any reason for such a postponement.

Maybe soon, in January, a letter dated 12/15  will arrive for you.
