While doing my 2021 return, I noticed a substantial error on my 2020 return. I need to file an amended 2020 return. Should I wait to file my 2021 until after I amend my 2020 return? I have already filed an extension.
Thanks.

There is no need to wait to file the 2021 return as it will take a minimum of 6 months or longer before the IRS will start to process the 2020 amended return.

Thanks for the reply. My concern is that the amended return will have a different AGI number on it that might have some effect on the 2021 return.

The IRS will only have your 2020 AGI in their database for the original tax return that was filed. They do not change their database for an amended 2020 tax return.

Thanks for the clarification. I will go ahead and file the 2021 return.
