Amended 2024 MI Return does not $0 amount owed

I had omitted to include my 1099-SA from my federal return and realized I needed to amend my 2024 federal and state returns t include.  When I indicated I needed to amend my return my federal tax calculation zeroed out but the stated did not.  It stated that I owed $148 which is the exact amount for the penalty and interest I owed since I did not pay estimated taxes.  I looked at the logic of the calculation - it indicates if the amounts are greater than do 1 thing and if the amounts are less than do something else - Since the return is amended the amounts are equal - and then the penalty and interest are stilled moved over.

I should not pay penalty and interest twice so how can I get this to calculate correctly on my amended return?

Let's check a couple of things because it sounds like an entry was missed.

  • First, be sure the amended return box is checked.
  • Check line 32, sounds wrong and needs correction. Review your answers.

Once these two items are cleared up, determine if you have a tax liability. If your state return shows no additional tax due then the 1099-SA is not causing any additional tax. A state amended return is not required.
