Amend to change answer to digital asset question

Hi all,

Accidentally answered incorrectly on the yes/no digital asset question. I began the amendment process in the turbotax portal but this question was nowhere to be found.

I spoke with a representative over the phone who told me to go through every single income/deduction/etc. module to try to find it. I still could not locate it.

How on earth can I make this very simple update?

Thanks in advance.

After you finish entering details of income click on continue.

  • Did either of you receive a distribution for a natural disaster from 2019-2022? say yes or no Continue
  • In the next screen it will ask you
  • Did you acquire, sell, or exchange any virtual currency in 2023?
  • Change your answer to yes Continue

I did that but was not prompted for the question, even after I continued through the advertisements to upgrade my turbotax membership.

Maybe that would have worked before I actually filed my return. I'm trying to do this through the amendment portal.

If you had sales of digital assets you can amend to include those transactions on your tax return.

There are three ways to enter your crypto in TurboTax:

How to import your crypto

How to upload a CSV

How to enter your crypto manually in TurboTax Online

How to enter your crypto manually in TurboTax Desktop

I need to change my answer to "No"- I didn't have any sale of digital assets nor did I receive any digital assets.

I'm looking for the yes or no question.

You don't need to Amend your Return to change the answer to the digital assets question.

If you didn't buy, sell or exchange any digital assets, your return will be unchanged from your original filing.

I have not file my taxes yet. Unfortunately, it asks:

Did you own or control a foreign bank acount...?
Did you take a disaster distribution...?

From there is continues to "Bob, Here's a picture of your 2023 income..."

It does not ask about digital assets again. And uploading a CSV from a supported crypto exchange did not change the answer. When I print the tax return ithe No box is still checked, but I want the "yes" box to be checked.

Reporting cryptocurrency income under Investment Income in TurboTax does not change the answer from No to Yes. Follow the instructions below to review your answers to several questions, including digital assets:

In TurboTax Online:

  1. Down the left side of the screen, select Wages & Income.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Continue.
  3. Continue through several screens until you reach the screen Did you have a financial stake in a digital asset?

In TurboTax for Desktop:

  1. Go to Federal Taxes >> Wages & Income
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click "Done with income."
  3. Continue through the questions about foreign accounts and disaster distributions.
  4. The next page asks about digital assets.

Hello,

I did not buy or sell digital assets but I did gain a few dollars of interest on holding a digital asset in 2023. I wrongly answered No to the digital assets question because I only held the asset. But I did receive USDC ( a digital asset) as a reward for holding it. I have tried and tried but cannot figure out how to change my answer from No to Yes on the digital asset question while trying to amend my return. What do I do?

You do not need to file an amended return to change the digital assets question, as long as your digital asset rewards were correctly reported originally.

Per the IRS, you should only file an amended return if there's a change in your:

  • Filing status
  • Income
  • Deductions
  • Credits
  • Dependents
  • Tax liability

You can confirm this by answering the questions on the IRS page, Should I file an amended return?

If you have to report the rewards, please see How do I report a crypto airdrop?

You are wrong, the desktop version of TurboTax will not ask this question once you answered it. Overpriced software given the bugs.

I have the same problem. One year later. Turbo Tax needs to own up to this and fix it.

I also have this problem and the software does not ask the question again as you describe. Please help.

Can you clarify which software you are using?  Online or Desktop?

Hi...I'm using the desktop software on a mac and having the same problem. I click "Done With Income" and get asked about foreign bank accounts, then disaster distributions, then it goes to the "Picture of Your 2024 Income" screen. It never asks about digital assets. I haven't filed yet, but I don't feel good filing with the digital asset checkbox being incorrectly marked.

Figured this out with the desktop version. If you click on the "Forms" button at the top of the window, you have the ability to go to the 1040 and check "yes" or "no" yourself. Hope that helps someone!

We'd love to help you complete your tax return, @jperasso. Can you please clarify your question? This thread has gotten messy.

My problem is that when I initially went through the tax preparation process (online turbo tax) I was asked if I had/sold digital currency in 2024. I answered no. I then learned my wife did have/sell some (very small amount, for $8 gain). I uploaded the .csv file from coinbase. That all went well but I was not asked the question about whether I owned bitcoin again. When I went to review my 1040 on filing, it still showed me answering "no" to the question of if I had bitcoin.

Now I cannot change that answer. I have tried every combination of options and menu's. And I spent 45 minutes on with turbotax support, where I shared my screen, and, even after they got additional help, they could not find a way to do it. We went around and around in circles clicking here and there. They suggest deleting the coinbase entry and say that it will ask again when I add again, but it does not.

It seems from this post that this problem has been ongoing at least since 2024 in both online and other versions. Please help. I have already paid and spent many hours entering everything and dealing with this.

Well i tried the smart phone app. On Android phone. And when I reviewed income section I got the question again and was able to change to yes. (Is not a bitcoin question but crypto currency question. )

I deleted the crypto entry before doing this. In case anyone has the same problem. Then I added it back AFTER finding the question. But it does not ask while entering crypto info.
