I am expected to get my return on April 4, 2022 and I plan to submit an amend form to change status to dependent. Since the last day to file is the April 18th, I am worried that my parents wont be able to file in time since it was recommended my amend form be processed, which takes a long time, so that my parents can claim me as a dependent. Would my parents have to file an extension?
Your parents do not have to wait until your amended return is processed to file their return. Since they will have to paper file, it will take a very long time to get it processed. They could file an extension, but they should send it in as soon as possible so it can get in the queue.
If they did it for e-file, would they have to wait. They were not planning to paper file.
Your parents will not be able to e-file this year because you already filed a tax return saying you could not be claimed as a dependent. Even after you file an amended return to say that you can be claimed, your parents still will not be able to e-file, no matter how long they wait. They have to print their tax return, sign it, and file it by mail.
