I prepared my return using On-Line Self-Employed TurboTax and E-filed. The E-file was accepted and the IRS sent me the correct refund of $282. Now I need to amend the return. But using the amend function of On-Line Self-Employed TurboTax, Column A from the 1040X shows incorrect original gross income, taxable income and an incorrect refund of $354. How can this be fixed?
Since the 2018 online amendment program is not operational until December did you download the full 2018 downloaded program ?
Are you currently working with that downloaded version ? If so did you make changes before starting the amendment process ?
I logged in and used the Amend option shown in the front page menu in the 2018 On-line Self-Employed TurboTax. This is the same software that I used to prepare the original filing.
If the On-Line Amend function is not operational, why does the current software version shown an option to amend?
2018 online is closed to get ready for next year 2019 program. 2018 is now the prior year. So you have to download your .tax2018 file and install the Desktop program to open it to finish it or to Amend it. But you might not be able to download the .tax file while they are transitioning over to 2019. If you can't get it now you will have to wait until December when 2019 opens and they have all the 2018 files moved over to the past year.
Well you can purchase the 2018 downloaded version OR call TT support to get one pushed your way if you paid for an Online version OR simply wait for the amendment program to come online in December ... since you have 3 years to amend the return then waiting is the easiest option.
The Amend Option is the top item in the menu. It appears to work normally and generates the 1040-X and all the other forms required to file the amended return. The issue is that the original return numbers in Column A of the 1040-X are incorrect. If I hadn't caught the error my amended filing would have been wrong. Features that are not functioning properly should either be fixed or removed.
As far as the download is concerned, I am trying to get that to work but so far no luck.
No, I owe additional tax and interest charges and penalties are accruing. Waiting cost me $$$$. The program should work correctly. Why should users wait for the 2019 tax version? The 2018 version of the software is the appropriate venue for amending the 2018 return.
If you are now using the downloaded program and the info in column A is incorrect then something was changed prior to starting the amendment process. If you delete the amended return and change the return back to how it was filed then you can start the amendment process again.
If you started amending your federal return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment, follow this process to correctly "unamend" your federal return:
State Amendments
The best way to "unamend" your state return is to go through your state return from the beginning and keep your eyes peeled for amend-related screens or questions.
The amend question usually appears right at the beginning or towards the end of the state interview (never in the middle).
Correct any entries that have to do with an amended return, e.g.:
If you still can't get rid of your state amendment form, try clearing your state return and starting over.
You don't use the 2019 program. But if you used the Online version for 2018 you might have to wait for 2019 to be released to download the .tax2018 file to open in the 2018 Desktop program. Access to 2018 online returns might be limited right now as they transition over to 2019.
if you think you will owe on an amended return you can send in a payment to the IRS directly at
The same is with the cd version. I am amending my 2018 in a situation where I am going from itemized deductions to standard, I am going from 15k deductions to 12k which I know will reduce my income-tax refund from $5400 to about $4700. Instead it creates a return with my getting additional money. I have tried it 6-10 times and the funny part is the CA state does work half the time. help
