Accidentally overpaid owed amount to IRS when finalizing tax returns

So, I accidentally added up what I owed for the federal and state taxes and paid that amount on the IRS' new 1040 payment website via credit card, rather than just paying the federal amount. Stupid mistake, I know. Will that money get refunded once the IRS sees that more money was paid than was was owed on the federal side of things? Or will I need to initiate that somehow?

They should send you a letter, notifying you of the overpayment. You can also initiate the call to the IRS. Please see the information below, per the IRS:

What do I do if I find an uncredited or misapplied payment?

Contact us at the toll-free number listed on your notice with your information. Our representative will discuss the issue with you and provide further instructions.

What choices do I have about what to do with my overpayment?

You can have your overpayment credit refunded to you or you can have it applied to other taxes or tax periods.
