2019 Verification of Education Credits

I received a bill from the IRS stating that I potentially owe $1,258 because they do not agree with my education credits on my 2019 return. It says that they need to verify the education credits that I claimed on my 1040 and I need to "send a detailed explanation of the amounts I paid to support the amounts claimed." Specifically, they are wanting to correct education credits, schedule 3, line 3 (non-refundable education credits) and American opportunity credit, form 1040, line 18c (refundable American opportunity credit).

I am just a little lost here because I file through turbo tax for the ease of simply answering questions and they do the hard part of calculating and knowing what can be deducted etc. What do I need to do? Exactly what amounts am I needing a detailed explanation of? What qualifies as a "detailed explanation"?? Help! I would appreciate any and all insight!

Send any receipts or acknowledgments of your education expenses. Call the IRS if you need further clarification.
