I have used desktop version of Turbo Tax every year for the last +10 years to file my taxes. I know I save the .tax version as well as a pdf file in a couple different storage drives every year. Any time I've ever tried to view previous years of taxes filed, first I open the Turbo Tax program for the year I need to review. This time it's 2018 which didn't get filed until 2019. I was reviewing a comparison print off of years 2014-2018 totals an noticed major discrepancies in the totals for 2018. I need to be able to view and print 2018 taxes to figure out what I did wrong in order to properly file my taxes for 2019, 2020, 2021, & 2022. How is this done?
When I open 2018 program it runs as if no 2018 taxes were filed & only gives me the option to start a new return. Where are my 2018 returns & how do I access them?
Your 2018 tax returns are in the .tax2018 files that you saved on your computer. The 2018 TurboTax program will not automatically find the files if they were moved or renamed since you saved them in the program. If it does not find the files, click the "Find a Tax File" link and navigate to where the .tax2018 files are. Then you will be able to select a file and open it.
If you can't find the files, search your entire hard drive for *.tax2018. Check the Recycle Bin too, just in case. The Windows search does not search the Recycle Bin.
If the .tax2018 files are not on your hard drive, copy them from one of your backup drives. (Don't try to open a file directly from the backup drive.) You will still have to use "Find a Tax File" to open the copied files because they were not saved on the hard drive by TurboTax.
