2018 I worked about 8-9 months out of the year full time. My state tax refund was over 500. 2019 I worked at the same place, for again 8-9 months out of the year. My state tax refund is only 69 dollar

My state refund is only 69 dollars. Why the drastic difference?

Nobody can really answer your question for you without closely examining your tax returns for both years.

Have you looked at your 2018 and 2019 state tax returns side by side to see what changed? Was less tax withheld on your state return for 2019 than in 2018?  Did you have more income with the same amount of withholding even though you worked the same number of months? Did state tax laws change resulting in an increase in tax liability for the same amount of income?

There could be a couple of reasons that you state taxes are so high this year.

You may want to verify that you entered everything into TurboTax correctly by following these steps:

  1. Select Tax Tools on the left hand side of your screen,
  2. Select Tools,
  3. Select View Tax Summary,
  4. Select Preview my State Return on the left hand side of your screen.

There could also be a change in your state withholdings for 2019, or your state may have some new taxes in place.  You may want to check with your State Governing Body for tax changes.
