Form 1099-NEC specifically reports Nonemployee Compensation, including grant funds received for child care.

To enter your Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Navigate to 1099-NEC:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-NEC.
    • TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1099-NEC and select the Jump to link.
    • Select Self-Employment: Even though it might not seem like the perfect fit, select "Self-Employment." This is because the IRS treats 1099-NEC income as non-employee compensation, which typically falls under self-employment.  See the article here.
    • Next enter the amount from box 1.
  • When you’re done, Turbo ask you a few questions and help you through entering any expenses you may have so that you can reduce your taxable income.
