1040--NOT 1040X--comes up when attempting to amend a prior year return using TT desktop

Is there a way to change the form used in the desktop version of Turbotax from 1040 to 1040X?

•I have two prior year returns to amend.
•Both documents that I need are available in Turbotax, so...
•I selected 'Amend (change) your 20XX return' ('22 and '23)
•I downloaded the desktop version of Turbotax
•I went through all the steps, entering the new information I missed when I originally filed
•It calculates these changes...

...but the document is a 1040--not a 1040X--and it is as if I am filling it out for the first time, rather than amending the return. The changes impact the final calculations for what I owe/get back...but the numbers automatically entered into form 1040 don't show the difference between the original totals and the new--it is adding them together.

Any help would be appreciated!

A clarification on this question: I can see that 1040X is available on the "forms" dropdown menu of the desktop version. But when you start the amending process, you select 'amend a return.' Next, you see a list showing sections of the tax document, and you choose "update" for the section that needs amending (in my case, adding 1098T information). It says "Do you want to enter your higher education expenses." When you select "yes" it says "you can't claim an education credit" because "you didn't enter a valid first name"...but when you go back to add that information, the system sees this as a new return. When I tried just entering my name without the other information, it calculates it on a 1040X, but it as if I have no income at all and the calculations are not accurate.

The desktop allow multiple returns. Open your original file again and start fresh, save it with a new name and then proceed to amend your return. Go through the steps listed to amend:

  • Open TurboTax Desktop, then select Amend a return after it was filed and accepted by the IRS.
  • At Did you already file your return? select Yes.
  • Under Tell us a little more about your amend situation make the applicable choice.
  • At What do you need to change on your return, locate the info you need to change, select Update.
  • Continue through the steps, making your changes, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.
