When trying to update TurboTax Desktop for Windows, you may see one of these failed update errors:
- Microsoft Installer error: 1603
- Microsoft Installer error: 1310
- Microsoft Installer error: 1303
Follow these instructions to fix this:
- Exit TurboTax
- On your computer, open File Explorer and find the folder where TurboTax Desktop is installed
- For example, C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Individual 2021
- Right-click on any of the subfolders and select Properties
- Select Security
- Select Edit
- Under Group or user names, select your user name
- Under Permissions for Users, find Write and make sure Deny is unchecked and Allow is checked
- Repeat steps 2–6 for all subfolders
- Relaunch TurboTax
