Can I use direct debit to pay the IRS even though I'm not e-filing?

SOLVEDby TurboTax630Updated January 10, 2022

You won't see a direct debit option in TurboTax if you owe IRS taxes and are paper-filing, but you can use the IRS's Direct Pay service, which lets you pay your taxes directly out of your checking or savings account—just like direct debit.

There's no cost for using IRS Direct Pay. Here's what you do:

  1. In TurboTax, select the option Pay by check when asked how you want to pay your taxes.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to print a paper copy of your return.
    • Throw out (or better yet, recycle) the 1040-V voucher that prints out. You won't need it.
  3. Go to the IRS Direct Pay site and follow the instructions to submit your payment.
