Every year by the end of January, Uber and Lyft send out 1099s for the prior tax year that report how much you were paid. You can find what fees and expenses were taken out and the miles you drove on your annual tax summary.
If you drove for Uber or Lyft, you may receive the following tax documents:
- 1099-NEC: You’ll get this IRS tax document if you received more than $600 in incentives or other payment.
- 1099-K: You’ll get this IRS tax document if you made more than $20,000 and provided at least 200 rides and/or deliveries.
- Tax Summary: The unofficial document from Uber and Lyft, which provides a breakdown of your annual earnings and all of your business-related expenses that may be deductible, including your online miles driven.
If you didn't receive a 1099 from Uber this year, it may mean that you made less than $20,000 gross and less than 200 trips.
If you don't have a Form 1099 from Uber or Lyft, TurboTax won’t be able to import your income automatically
Instead, you'll manually enter your income from your Tax Summary, by following these steps:
- Sign in to your return and open or continue your return.
- Select Federal in the left menu.
- Select Wages & Income from the top.
- Select Self-Employment and Start (or Revisit if you've already entered self-employment income).
- Follow the instructions to enter your business income and expenses.
- When you see the Let’s enter the income for… screen, select Other self-employed income and Continue.
- Enter the Type of Income (like Trip earnings) and the amount and Continue.
After you enter all of your income information, you'll be able to enter your expenses. Just follow the instructions and we'll help you check for all your tax breaks.
