How does the end of support for Windows 8.1 affect my TurboTax experience?

SOLVEDby TurboTax18Updated January 30, 2024

Microsoft no longer supports PCs running Windows 8.1, so you need Windows 10 or higher to install TurboTax Desktop.

Older versions of TurboTax Desktop (tax years 2019, 2020, and 2021) are compatible with Windows 8.1 and higher.

If you use TurboTax Online, there’s no impact to you as long as you meet the minimum system requirements.

Yes, you can import your prior-year return after you update Windows.

For help updating to Windows 10 or 11, visit Windows Support.

If you don’t want to update your operating system, you can switch to TurboTax Online to file a return. Learn how to copy your prior-year information from TurboTax Desktop to TurboTax Online.

If you’d like to return TurboTax Desktop, submit a refund request within 60 days of purchase. You’ll need your license code or order number and a dated receipt.

Note: There’s no need to repurchase TurboTax after updating Windows.
