How do I look for a duplicate 1098 and amend my 2022 taxes if a duplicate is found?

by TurboTax334 Updated 1 month ago

Some TurboTax customers might have more than one 1098 form attached to their 2022 federal return, which means there’s a possibility they underpaid their taxes.

To look for a duplicate 1098 and amend your taxes if a duplicate is found, please follow these steps.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and go to Tax Home.
  2. Scroll down and select Your tax return & documents, and choose 2022.
  3. Select the dropdown for Amend (change) return and choose Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. On the screen that asks Why are you amending? Select TurboTax sent me an email and then Continue.
  5. Select Amending my return to fix info on the screen What did we contact you about? Select Continue.
  6. Select 2022 federal return and any state returns you filed on the screen that says Tell us which return(s) you want to amend.
  7. Scroll down to the Deductions & Credits section and select Start next to Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098).
  8. On the Here’s your 1098 info screen, review the 1098s listed. Delete any duplicate forms by selecting the trashcan icon, and then select Continue.
    • If the federal or state numbers at the top of the screen don’t change, you don't need to amend your return(s).
      • Select Cancel Amend on the left side of the screen.
    • If the federal or state numbers change at the top of the screen, you will need to amend your return(s).
      • Select Done on the Here’s the info for your amended federal return screen.
      • Enter a description on the screen Tell us why you’re amending your return and then select Continue.
      • Confirm your address and continue through the remaining questions.
