Do I need to amend my 2023 tax return to correct my home energy credit?

by TurboTax1120 Updated 3 weeks ago

Follow these steps to see if you should amend your return to claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit:

  1. Find line 22 on your Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.
  2. If it's 0 and you had one of these improvements, you don't need to amend:
    • Central air conditioners
    • Water heaters
    • Home energy audits
    • Doors and windows
    • Qualified heat pumps
    • Biomass boilers
    • Biomass stoves
  3. If that's not your situation, you need to amend your return to claim the credit.

You may not receive an additional refund, but the credit will be carried forward to next year.

To amend your product, select your situation and follow the instructions.

  1. Sign in to the TurboTax account where you prepared your 2023 return.
  2. On Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2023. If you haven't already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2023 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return (PDF).
  3. Select Amend (change) your return and go through the questions until you reach Here’s the info for your amended federal return screen.
  4. Go to residential energy credit.
  5. Go through the interview and enter the home energy details.
  6. When you reach the Here’s the info for your amended federal return screen, select Continue.
  7. On the Tell us why you’re amending your return screen, Form 1040-X: Explanation of Changes, enter to claim residential energy credit.
  8. Continue through your federal return and do the federal review.
  9. Amend state return, if applicable.
  10. Continue through the screens and follow the instructions to e-file your returns. If your state doesn't accept electronically filed returns, you will need to sign, date, and mail the amended return. The mailing address and balance due/refund amount are included on the File by Mail Instructions for your 2023 State Amended Tax Return, if applicable.
