- Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your Michigan City Income Tax Return. We recommend that you check the paper/PDF copy of your return or your records to verify the amount.
Note: The original City Income Tax Return will be needed to complete the amendment
- Sign in to the TurboTax account where you prepared your 2022 return. In Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2022. If you have not already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2022 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return (PDF).
- Select Add a State at the bottom of the 2022 tax return screen.
Note: You won't add a state. This gives you access to your return.
- On the You’ve already got a head start on state taxes screen, go to the left side and in the black ribbon select Tax Tools.
- Once the Tax Tools menu expands, select Tools.
- From the menu that appears in the middle of your screen, select Forms Mode.
- From the list of forms that appear on the left side of the screen, scroll down to CF-1040, your city return, and select the return. Your city return will then appear in the center screen.
- From the list on the left side of the screen, find the circle with the … across from Add form | Error Check and click the circle.
- Once the drop-down menu appears, select Print pdf of current form. Then Close Forms mode.
- Compare the refund/balance due from step 1 with the current amounts shown on the printed return
- If they are different, you will need to amend your city return by continuing with step 11 below. Be sure to sign out of TurboTax.
- If the refund/balance due is the same, STOP HERE, no action is required. You can exit TurboTax.
- To do the amended city return, find the online form and instructions for amending your city return by visiting Michigan City Tax Returns.
- Follow the online city instruction to complete the city income tax amended return.
- Amounts needed for the Original return column can be found on your original return.
- Amounts needed for the Correct Amount column can be found on the updated city return printed in step 8.
- Enter TO REMOVE DUPLICATE INCOME as the reason for amending.
- Print, sign, and date the amended city return. The amended return will need to be mailed.
- Save a copy of your amended city return for your records
