How do I amend my 2022 Connecticut state tax return to include 100% pension and annuity subtraction?

Some customers might have overpaid their Connecticut taxes because TurboTax was not taking the higher 100% pension and annuity subtraction from taxable income. Instead, the program was applying the 50% teacher's retirement subtraction.

To amend your return, select your product and follow the instructions below.

TurboTax Online

  1. Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your Connecticut income taxes. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return, or your banking records to verify the correct amount 

  2. Sign in to the TurboTax account where you prepared your 2022 return. In Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2022. If you have not already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2022 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return (PDF) 

  3. Select Amend (change) return and then select Amend Using TurboTax Online

  4. On the OK, let’s get a kickstart on your 2022 amended return screen, choose TurboTax sent me an email, then Continue

  5. On the What did we contact you about? screen, choose Something else then Continue

  6. On the Tell us which 2022 return(s) you want to amend screen, select 2022 Connecticut return then Continue. Your state refund/balance due tracker will usually reset to $0. This is normal

  7. On the Let’s get your state taxes done right screen, select Continue

  8. On the Let’s amend your state taxes screen, select Amend next to Connecticut

  9. On the Let’s Amend Your Connecticut Return screen, select Yes, let’s amend and get it done (Recommended), then Continue

  10. On the Tell Us About Your Original Refund or Balance Due screen, verify the amount shown with the amount you wrote down in step 1. If the numbers are different, make the necessary correction, then select Continue

  11. On the Amended Return Explanation Statement, select No

  12. On the Complete Your Amended Information screen, select Continue

  13. On the Complete Amended Information screen, select Continue

  14. On the Let’s Make Sure You’re Ready to Review screen, select No, I still have state amend info to enter. Then select Continue

  15. On the OK, Let’s Go Over Your Return Again screen, select Continue

  16. On the Your 2022 Connecticut taxes are ready for us to check screen, select Edit next to Income

  17. On the Here’s the income that Connecticut handles differently screen, select Edit next to Teacher’s Retirement Pay

  18. On the Any Taxable Teacher’s Retirement Pay? screen, remove the amount shown in the Taxable CT Teacher’s Retirement Income box

  19. On the Here’s the income that Connecticut handles differently screen:

    • If the refund meter changes, you will need to amend your tax return to receive the refund. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Done with Income and go to step 20

    • If the refund meter does not change, you may stop. An amended return is not required

  20. On the Your 2022 Connecticut taxes are ready for us to check screen, scroll to the bottom and select Let’s check it over

  21. On the Smart Check Results screen, make any corrections and then select Continue. Then Continue again

  22. On the Let’s get your return ready to file screen, select Check my return

  23. On the Just about ready to file. But first…screen, select Continue

  24. On the Let’s take care of these details now screen, select Review 

  25. On the Here are the results of our final review screen, select Fix Connecticut Return

  26. On the Not Eligible for Electronic Filing screen, select Continue. Then Continue again

  27. On the We still have a couple details to button up screen, select Continue

  28. On the Here are the numbers for your amended return screen, review your refund amount and then select Continue

  29. On the Great job so far! screen, select Continue

  30. On the Just one more step and we’ll file your returns screen, select Start next to Step 3

  31. On the We’ve determined the fastest way to get your federal and state refunds screen, select Continue

  32. You may see some identity verification screens. Answer any questions until you reach the Now, it’s time to download and print your returns screen. Select Download to save your amended return. Follow the instructions to print, sign, date, and mail the amended return. The mailing address and refund amount are included on the File by Mail Instructions for your 2022 Connecticut Amended Tax Return 

Note: Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.

  1. On the You did it! It’s time to file! screen, select I’m done

TurboTax CD/Download

  1. Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your Connecticut state income taxes. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return(s), or your banking records to verify the correct amount

  2. Launch TurboTax and open your 2022 return

  3. Before you make any changes, select File and Save As... then add Amended 2022 return to the file name to preserve your original return

  4. Select Online and Check for Updates. Allow the program to update if any are available

  5. Select the Federal Taxes tab, (Personal tab if you’re using Home & Business), and then select Other Tax Situations. You may be asked to answer a few preliminary questions before you see a list of categories. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms select Start next to Amend a Return 

  6. On the We’ll help you change (amend) your return screen, select Continue

  7. On the Did you already file your return? screen, select Yes, I’ve already filed my return. Then select I was contacted by TurboTax and told I may need to amend for some other reason. Then select Continue

Note: The refund meters will reset to -0-. This is normal

  1. On the What do you need to change on your return? screen, scroll down to the bottom and select Update next to State Return

  2. On the Let’s work on your state return screen, select Continue

  3. On the Your State Returns screen, select Edit next to Connecticut

  4. On the Your 2022 Connecticut Return screen, select Continue

  5. On the Let’s Amend Your Connecticut Return screen, select Yes, let’s amend and get it done (Recommended), then Continue

  6. On the Tell Us About Your Original Refund or Balance Due screen, verify the amount shown with the amount you wrote down in step 1. If the numbers are different, make the necessary correction, then select Continue

  7. On the Amended Return Explanation Statement, select No

  8. On the complete Your Amended Information screen, select Continue

  9. On the Complete Amended Information screen, select Continue

  10. On the Let’s Make Sure You’re Ready to Review screen, select No, I still have state amend info to enter. Then select Continue

  11. On the OK, Let’s Go Over Your Return Again screen, select Continue

  12. On the Your 2022 Connecticut taxes are ready for us to check screen, select Start next to Income

  13. On the Any Taxable Military Retirement Pay? screen, select Continue

  14. On the Any Taxable Teacher’s Retirement Pay? screen, remove the amount shown in the Taxable CT Teacher’s Retirement Income box

    • If the refund meter changes, you will need to amend your tax return to receive the refund. Select Continue and go to step 22

    • If the refund meter does not change, you may stop. An amended return is not required

  15. Select Continue until you reach the Here’s the income that Connecticut handles differently screen. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Done with Income

  16. On the Your 2022 Connecticut taxes are ready for us to check screen, scroll to the bottom and select Let’s check it over

  17. On the Check This Entry screen, make any corrections and then select Continue

  18. On the Not Eligible for Electronic Filing screen, select Continue

  19. On the Review Your Return screen, select Continue. Then select Done With Review

  20. On the You’re Done with 2022 Connecticut screen, select Done With States

  21. On the Let’s make sure your taxes are correct screen, select Continue

  22. On the Let’s Check These Entries screen, select Check Entries. No changes are being made to the Federal return, so please continue through these screens

  23. On the Run Smart Check Again screen, select Done, then Continue

  24. On the You’re Done! Print and Mail Your Returns screen, follow the instructions to print, sign, date, and mail the amended return. The mailing address and refund amount are included on the File by Mail Instructions for your 2022 Connecticut Amended Tax Return. 

Note: Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.
