How do I amend my 2021 return because my federal excess advance premium tax credit repayment was understated?
Some TurboTax customers may have underpaid their 2021 federal and state taxes because their federal excess advance premium tax credit repayment was understated.
You'll need to amend your 2021 return to correct the error. Select an option below for step-by-step instructions on how to amend and re-file your return.
- Find your original federal and state returns, and note the refund or balance due amount(s) listed. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return(s), or your banking records, to verify the correct amount.
- Sign in to the TurboTax account you used to prepare your 2021 return.
- In Tax Home, find Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2021.
- If you haven't already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2021 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return.
- Select Amend (change) return and then select Amend Using TurboTax Online.
- Check your refund/balance due on your return:
- If the state amount is the same as you noted in step 1, you will only need to amend your federal tax return. No state amendment is needed.
- If the state amount is different, you will need to amend your federal and state tax returns.
- Next, on the OK, let’s get a kickstart on your 2021 amended return screen, choose TurboTax sent me an email, then Continue.
- On the What did we contact you about? screen, choose Something else, then Continue.
- On the Tell us which 2021 return(s) you want to amend screen, choose the option according to your need in step 5.
- If your state amount was the same, select I want to amend only my federal or only my state return,then check Amend my federal return.
- If your state amount was different, select I want to amend both my federal and state returns.
- Select Done on the Here’s the info for your amended federal return screen.
- On the Tell us why you’re amending your return screen, enter TO CORRECT FORM 8962, then Continue.
- Make any corrections necessary on the Let’s confirm your mailing address screen, and Continue.
- On the Let’s Make Sure You’re Ready to Review screen, select Yes, I’ve entered everything and let’s review, and Continue.
- On the Smart Check Results screen, select Continue, then Continue again.
- On the We’ll run a completecheck scan to finalize screen, select Check my info.
- On the You’re good to go! screen, select Continue. You'll see a screen with your amended return results. Select Continue.
- On the Great job so far! screen, select Continue.
- On the Just one more step and we’ll file your return screen, select Start by Step 3, then continue through the screens to print and save your federal (and state) amended return.
- If you can't e-file the returns, you'll need to sign, date, and mail the amended return(s). The mailing address and refund/balance due are included on the File by Mail Instructions for your 2021 Federal Amended Tax Return and 2021 State Amended Tax Return, if applicable.
- Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.
- Find your original federal and state returns, and note the refund or balance due amount(s) listed. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return(s), or your banking records, to verify the correct amount.
- Open your 2021 return in TurboTax 2021.
- Before you make any changes, select File and Save As... then add Amended 2021 return to the file name to preserve your original return.
- Select Online and Check for Updates. Allow the program to update if any are available.
- Check your refund/balance due on your return:
- If the state amount is the same as you noted in step 1, you will only need to amend your federal tax return. No state amendment is needed.
- If the state amount is different, you will need to amend your federal and state tax returns.
- Select the Federal Taxes tab, (Personal tab if you’re using Home & Business), and then select Other Tax Situations. You may be asked to answer a few preliminary questions before you see a list of categories. Find Other Tax Forms and select Start next to Amend a Return.
- On the We’ll help you change (amend) your return screen, select Continue.
- On the Did you already file your return? screen select Yes, I have already filed my return. Then select I was contacted by TurboTax and told I may need to amend for some other reason, then select Continue.
- On the Tell us which returns you want to amend screen, choose according to your need in step 5.
- If your state amount was the same, select I want to amend only my federal or only my state return, then check Amend my federal return.
- If your state amount was different, select I want to amend both my federal and state returns.
- Then Continue. Your federal and state, if applicable, refund/balance due tracker will usually reset to $0. This is normal.
- On the What do you need to change on your return? screen, select Done.
- Select Yes or No to update your address, if necessary, on the Do you still receive your mail at this address? screen, then Continue.
- Choose an option on the Presidential Election Campaign and Continue.
- On the Special Situations on Your Amended Return, select Continue.
- On the Why did you need to amend your return?, enter TO CORRECT FORM 8962, then Continue.
- On the Let’s make sure your taxes are correct, select Continue. Review any final warnings and fix any errors. If you make any changes at this stage, be sure to run Smart Check again, until there are no new warnings to fix, then select Done.
- On the You’re Done! Print and Mail Your Returns screen, follow the instructions to print and save your federal and state, if applicable, amended return(s).
- If you can't e-file the returns, you need to sign, date, and mail the amended return(s). The mailing address and refund/balance due are included on the File by Mail Instructions for your 2021 Federal Amended Tax Return and 2021 State Amended Tax Return, if applicable.
- Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.
