TurboTax Desktop error: A secure connection is necessary to keep your information safe.

SOLVEDby TurboTax103Updated December 13, 2023

When we electronically send your return to the IRS or state agencies, we use SSL encryption to safeguard your info. When establishing a secure connection, if the encryption isn't strong enough, TurboTax will stop the connection. A secure connection is necessary to keep your information safe.

Select the solutions below to fix this error.

  1. Go to the TurboTax website.
  2. If your browser gives you an error, your connection probably isn't secure. Follow the troubleshooting guide for your browser.

Make sure that the date and time settings on your computer are correct.

Make sure your Windows operating system is up to date.

  1. If your antivirus or firewall program has a feature to scan/protect SSL connections, temporarily turn it off.
  2. You may need to look through your antivirus/firewall vendor program's help to see how to do this.
  3. Remember to turn SSL scanning back on when you're done using TurboTax.
