WP-4

I will be retiring effective Dec1. , and I will be returning Back to work January 2, 2025. I received paperwork including a WP4 form. My filing status is married filing single. My question is step 2 b (ii). I’m not sure what goes there. I’ve read the instructions and examples but still uncertain. Do I put my salary as a teacher since I will be returning to work? Thanks

There is no such filing status as "married filing single."   If you are legally married your filing status choices are married filing jointly or married filing separately.   So...are you retiring from work as a teacher and then returning to work as a teacher----or will you be in some other profession?  It sounds like all you are doing is taking a month off.

Yes, I will be returning back to teaching. Also, sorry about filing status error. Married filing separately is correct.

So you will be filing married filing separately. Then you do not enter anything about your spouse's income in Step 2.

You say that you are retiring----but then returning to work.   You only enter information about your own income, which should include any income from teaching and any pension income you expect to receive.

In step 2 b i you enter the income you will receive from the teaching job; in 2b ii enter any income you will receive from a pension.  Then for Step 2 b iii, you add those amounts together.

And.....of course....for the teaching job you will be working at starting in January you will provide a W-4 to the employer.
