You get a higher standard deduction if you are 65 or older.

The standard deduction makes some of your income “tax free.”  It is not a refund.  You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12 of your 2024 Form 1040.

2024 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $14,600    (65 or older/legally blind + $1950)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY            $14,600    (65 or older/legally blind + $1550)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $29,200    (65 or older/legally blind + $1550)

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $21,900    (65 or older/legally blind + $1950)

Yes, if you are filing your taxes, you will get an extra $1950 for being over 64 on top of the $14,600 if you are single.

The 2024 Standard Deductions are as follows:

  • Married Filing Joint (MFJ)              $29,200
  • Married Filing Separate (MFS)      $14,600
  • Head of Household (HOH)             $21,900
  • Single                                                 $14,600

Blind or over 65 and MFJ or MFS add $1,550

Single or HOH if blind or over 65 add $1,950
