Why would charitable contributions increase state tax due?

I'm adding my charitable contributions, and while this makes my federal taxes decrease, it is making my state (UT) taxes increase (according to the "live" tally in the upper lefhand corner of TurboTax). In fact, the increase in state tax takes me from a refund to owing tax. It's going to cost me more than what my federal tax decreases. Any clarity on this? Thanks.

You will have to examine your state (UT) return.

It could be that the deduction is reducing one or more tax credits on your state return.
