why my 8606 didn't show up?

I did backdoor Roth in 2021. I entered everything and see that 1040 4a =12000, and 4b=0, and schedule 1 line 20 is blank. Looks like everything is good, except that I can't see my 8606 form. And the TT is not reading the 8606 info that I entered last year ( since it keeps telling me my 2020 non-deducible basis is 0, but it is not). Anyone can help? Thanks!

To verify, you followed these steps to enter the 2021 nondeductible contribution on your 2021 tax return:

  1. Click “Deductions &Credits” on the top
  2. Click "I'll choose what to work on"
  3. Scroll down to “Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions” and click “Start
  4. Select “traditional IRA” for both you and your spouse
  5. Answer “No” to “Is This a Repayment of a Retirement Distribution?
  6. Enter the amount you contributed
  7. Answer “No” to the recharacterized question on the “Did You Change Your Mind?” screen
  8. Answer the next questions until you get to “Any Nondeductible Contributions to Your IRA?” and select “Yes” if you had nondeductible contributions before this tax year
  9. If you had a basis in the Traditional IRA before then enter the amount (your 2020 Form 8606 line 14).
  10. Answer “No” to “Is This a Repayment of a Retirement Distribution?
  11. Enter the amount your spouse contributed
  12. Answer “No” to the recharacterized question on the “Did You Change Your Mind?” screen
  13. Answer the next questions until you get to “Any Nondeductible Contributions to Your IRA?” and select “Yes” if your spouse had nondeductible contributions before this tax year
  14. If you had a basis in the Traditional IRA before then enter the amount (your spouse's 2020 Form 8606 line 14).
  15. On the “Choose Not to Deduct IRA Contributions” screen choose “Yes, make part of my IRA contribution nondeductible” and enter the amount for you and your spouse (if you have a retirement plan at work and are over the income limit it will be nondeductible automatically and you only get a warning and then a screen saying $0 is deductible).

After you entered all this you still do not see Form 8606?

I assume the $12,000 includes a $6,000 contribution to Traditional IRA for 2021. Did you enter it first before you entered your 1099-R?

yes, I contributed 6000, my husband also contributed 6000. So the total for us is 12000

You only get 8606 if your 2021 earnings are too high for a ROTH contribution.

Thank you! This was the approach I was taking. But initially, I answered "Yes" to the question: Did you change your mind- since I thought based on the description on the screen, it is considered recategorization- I have to say that the instruction is very misleading. Anyway, when I went back and try to change it, that question never shows up again. It directly goes to the screen asks me how much I convered. I entered 0 there. And then I manually added the 1099-r.

Now I just went to the form view and manually added the 8606-T and 8606-S. Not sure whether it works.

Is there any way that I can get that question "did you change your mind" back so I can change my original selection?

Yes, you will have to delete the 1099-R and all the related IRA inputs/forms and start the input process again and you will see that question.

Please follow the steps at How to I delete a tax form? and follow the instructions stated in the "Windows Instructions" area and delete all the IRA related forms. When you start the input again, you will see that question.

I did. Actually, that was before I entered 1099-r. In the IRA section, I unchecked both our names in the first question to pretend we didn't contribute anything to IRA. It asked whether we want to remove IRA entries. I clicked "Yes". I saved the file and exit out, and then reopen the application (windows desktop version)- and this time I opened the IRA section and re-checked the check box for both of us to indicate that we both contributed to IRA. And followed the steps. Unfortunately, I still didn't see that question come up- I have exhausted all the possible ways and had no luck. That's when I manually entered the 1099-r and 8606 forms.

Since you entered $0 for the "how much was transferred" question TurboTax will not count it as recharacterization and it should not prevent you from getting Form 8606.

Making the traditional IRA contribution nondeductible (or TurboTax making it automatically nondeductible if you have a retirement plan at work and your income is too high, step 15) should trigger Form 8606.

Can you check the "IRA Contribution Worksheet"?  If you choose to make it nondeductible you should have an entry on line 14. If TurboTax made it nondeductible because of your income and retirement plan at work you should have an entry on line 13. In both situations, you should have an entry on line 18 nondeductible traditional IRA contributions and that will be carried to Form 8606.

Below is what I have on the IRA contribution worksheet. Now sure it is created/filled after I manually generated the 8606 form or not. So, do my manually generated 8606 forms work for my purpose? Or do I still need to find out a way for TT to generate the 8606 for me?

No, it seems that you have everything filled out correctly and if you verified your Form 8606 then you can continue with your return to finish it.
