If you are a business owner or contractor who provides services to other businesses, then you are generally considered self-employed.

For more information please check Am I considered self-employed?

If the company where you work gave you a W-2, then you would be considered an employee.  If they gave you a 1099-NEC then they consider you to be a contractor and you would file as self-employed.

  • When you’re paid this way, there’s no withholding taken out of your income, which means you’ll pay both self-employment tax as well as income tax.
  • A benefit of being self-employed is that it enables you to have lots of write-offs as well, so make sure to enter all your expenses. This helps you reduce the taxes you might owe or increase your refund. We’ll help you get every possible tax break you deserve.

Did you upgrade to the Self Employed version?  Did you get a 1099Misc or 1099NEC for something?  That is usually for self employment income.

If you want to downgrade to a lower version, If you haven't filed, registered or paid you can try to clear and start over

Or if it doesn't let you clear and you haven't paid you could just start a new account.  Online is only good for 1 return per account.  But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.   How to start another return in the Online version
