If you wish to file an NC state tax return, you will be prompted to begin, once you enter all your Federal information. If you can't get to it yet, it may be because the state does not have the form ready to be processed yet.

TurboTax will turn in your North Carolina D-400 and all other required forms if you choose to e-file your return.

If you print and mail it, TurboTax will print out the D-400 for you to sign and any other forms you need. After signing, you will attach any printed W-2s and 1099s with North Carolina income tax withheld.

For a full list of attachments see What you should send us… on the left column of page 4 in the North Carolina Individual Income Tax Instructions.

E-filing is faster, and more convenient and there is no chance your return will be lost in the mail. If you do mail your return, we suggest sending it my certified mail with return receipt.

Does TurboTax have an electronic D-400 form that I can fill out and if so, how do I get to it? Thanks.

No. TurboTax does not have a stand-alone D-400 Form. The TurboTax program is a complete package that files your federal and state returns. Once you purchase the program, you will enter all your federal information and then the information flows to your North Carolina resident's state return.

If you are just looking to file the NC state return only, you can file it directly with NC here.
