What does reject code IND-664-02 mean

The reject code means that your Social Security number has already been used to e-file a return. The IRS has a database that tracks every SSN used to e-file, so it can spot duplicates.

This might be caused by one of a couple of things:

1. You accidentally e-filed already. Did TurboTax tell you that your return was Accepted at some point? If so, you can't resubmit it again, but you must amend the return if you have to make changes. If this is the case, come back and ask us for How to Amend.

2. Someone else filed for you. Unfortunately, this is how tax identity thieves operate - they steal your name, birthdate, and SSN and fake a return to get a fat refund. If this is the case, you need to see this IRS website (bottom half of the page).

So check to see if TurboTax thinks you had already e-filed.

Thank you- that’s what I was afraid of. I definitely did not file. I looked on the IRS website and it does not have a return listed this year, does that rule it out? could it be an issue with my married name not matching my social security number  Or is that a different error code?  Thank you for your input!

Yes, if it was just a name/SSN mismatch should cause a R0000-500-01 reject code.

"it does not have a return listed this year, does that rule it out?"

I am not sure how quickly the transcripts are updated at this point, so, as you say, this may not mean anything yet.

I would start the tax identity theft process. If you can speak to a person at the IRS, you might ask them to confirm that a return was actually filed. If no, then the question is why your initial attempt was rejected with a IND-664-02.

Thank you for your help! I called IRS and after 2 hours on hold they were able to tell me no one has filed under my name and it was probably a glitch with the PIN. They said to mail it in.

It might very well have been me that filed the SSN through E File but I never fully completed the process. If not can you tell me if someone has filed fraudulently using my SSN?

We can't tell you that information, but you can speak to a person at the IRS, and you might ask them to confirm that a return was actually filed. If they tell you no, then you can ask why your initial attempt was rejected with a IND-664-02 code. I would make sure that no one else has filed a return with your personal information. The information in this TurboTax FAQ here has the IRS phone number for assistance.

The reject code means your Social Security number has already been used to e-file a return. The IRS has a database that tracks every SSN used to e-file, so it can spot duplicates.
